A step-by-step loudspeaker placement guide to dial in stereo imaging, bass, and toe-in. Learn room setup for speakers that fits your space and your ears.

Quick answer

Start with your speakers roughly 2 to 3 meters apart, pulled at least 30 cm from the wall behind them, and your listening seat about 1 to 1.5 times that distance away. Then make one change at a time: adjust distance from the front wall to tune bass, adjust side-wall distance to tune midrange openness, and adjust toe-in to lock in the center image. Small moves, repeated, beat one big rearranging session.

Before you move anything

Placement only works if the rest of the chain is stable. Level the speakers on their stands or feet, confirm left and right cables reach without strain, and check that nothing rattles when you play a bass-heavy track. If you use a remote like the CRM-3 system remote, keep it within reach so you can pause and adjust without walking back and forth.

Choose a starting triangle

An equilateral triangle between the two speakers and your ears is the standard starting point. If your room is narrow, start with the speakers closer together and the seat slightly farther back; if the room is wide, you can spread them out and sit closer. The goal is a stable center image before you fine-tune tone.

Tune bass with front-wall distance

Moving speakers closer to the wall behind them usually reinforces low frequencies; moving them farther out usually tightens bass but can thin it. Change this distance in 10–15 cm increments and listen to one familiar track. If bass sounds bloated or one-note, pull them out; if it sounds thin, push them back.

Tune openness with side-wall distance

Early reflections from side walls smear stereo imaging. If you can, keep at least 50–60 cm between each speaker and its nearest side wall, and avoid placing speakers in corners unless you can treat the room. If space is tight, angle the speakers inward slightly and accept a narrower sweet spot.

Set toe-in for a solid center

Toe-in means angling the speakers toward the listening position. Start with them firing straight ahead, then rotate each inward by 5–10 degrees at a time. Too little toe-in gives a diffuse center; too much narrows the image and can make the sound feel bright. Aim for a center vocal that stays put when you move your head slightly.

Listen at realistic levels

Placement decisions made at whisper volume often fall apart at normal listening levels. Use the same two or three tracks at the volume you actually enjoy, and check that the sound stays balanced when you turn it up. If it doesn't, revisit front-wall distance before you touch toe-in again.

Placement steps

  1. Step 1: Mark your starting triangle: Measure and mark the floor where each speaker will sit and where your ears will be. Aim for an equilateral triangle with sides of 2–3 meters. Common mistake: guessing distances by eye. A tape measure or laser measure saves hours.
  2. Step 2: Set front-wall distance: Place both speakers the same distance from the wall behind them, starting at 30–45 cm. Listen to a bass-heavy track you know well. Checkpoint: if bass is boomy, increase distance in 10 cm steps; if thin, decrease.
  3. Step 3: Set side-wall distance: Measure from each speaker's side to the nearest wall. Try to keep at least 50 cm on both sides for a balanced center image. Common mistake: letting one speaker sit much closer to a side wall than the other. Symmetry matters more than absolute distance.
  4. Step 4: Add toe-in gradually: With speakers firing straight, rotate each inward in small increments, listening for a locked center vocal. Stop when the image is solid but the treble still sounds natural. Checkpoint: if the sound gets harsh, you have gone too far; back off a few degrees.
  5. Step 5: Confirm at your normal volume: Play two or three familiar songs at the level you usually listen. Walk out of the sweet spot and back; the tonal balance should stay consistent. Next step: if something still feels off, revisit Step 2 before changing anything else.

Product facts

  • Voice 22 扬声器: The Voice 22 is a loudspeaker from MOON - Simaudio, offered in a Standard configuration and shown in product imagery as a freestanding cabinet for home audio playback. A freestanding cabinet gives you the flexibility to adjust distance from walls and toe-in without built-in mounting limits, which is exactly what this guide asks you to do.
  • CRM-3 Systemowy pilot zdalnego sterowania: The CRM-3 remote works with all two-channel MOON devices, including many older models, and can replace the CRM, CRM2, SRM, SRM2, Celeste, and RM-50. During placement sessions you will pause, replay, and adjust repeatedly; a compatible remote keeps you in the listening seat instead of at the rack.
